Feria of Advent

Commemoration of St. Melchiades, Pope and Martyr

Purple 3rd Class Feria

St. Melchiades died peacefully, after undergoing great sufferings in the persecution of Maximian, A.D. 314.

In places where the Feast of St. Melchiades is kept as a third class feast or higher, the Mass 'Si Diligis' for a Holy Pope is said, with commemorations of the Advent feria after the Collect, Secret, and Postcommunion, if appropriate.

Otherwise, the Mass of the preceding Sunday of Advent is said. There is neither Gloria nor Creed, the Alleluia and its verse is omitted from the Gradual, and the Common Preface is used. The following commemorations of St. Melchiades are made after the Collect, Secret, and Postcommunion.

COLLECT ¤ COMMEMORATION OF ST. MELCHIADES
Eternal Shepherd, regard graciously Thy flock, and keep it with an everlasting protection, by the intercession of blessed Melchiades, thy Martyr and Sovereign Pontiff, whom Thou hast constituted Shepherd of the whole Church. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.

SECRET ¤ COMMEMORATION OF ST. MELCHIADES
By the offered gifts we beg Thee, O Lord: enlighten kindly Thy Church: so that Thy flock everywhere may be increasing, and the Shepherds, under Thy direction, may be pleasing to Thy Name. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.

POSTCOMMUNION ¤ COMMEMORATION OF ST. MELCHIADES

O Lord, we beseech Thee, graciously govern Thy Church, which Thou hast fed with a holy meal; so that, directed by a mighty wisdom, she may progress in liberty, and persist in the integrity of faith. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who with Thee liveth and reigneth in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
