Feria of Advent

Commemoration of St. Sabbas, Abbot

Purple 3rd Class Feria

St. Sabbas organized monastic communities in Palestine and was famous for his virtues and austerities. He died A.D. 331.

In places where the Feast of St. Sabbas is kept as a third class feast or higher, the Mass 'Os Iusti' for a Holy Abbot is said, with commemorations of the Advent feria after the Collect, Secret, and Postcommunion, if appropriate.

Otherwise, the Mass of the preceding Sunday of Advent is said. There is neither Gloria nor Creed, the Alleluia and its verse is omitted from the Gradual, and the Common Preface is used. The following commemorations of St. Sabbas are made after the Collect, Secret, and Postcommunion.

COLLECT ¤ COMMEMORATION OF ST. SABBAS
May the intercession of blessed Sabbas, the Abbot, commend us unto Thee, we beseech Thee, O Lord: so that what we may not have by any merits of ours, we may obtain by his patronage. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.

SECRET ¤ COMMEMORATION OF ST. SABBAS
Sacris altaribus, Domine, hostias superpositas sanctus Sabbae Abbas, quaesumus, in salutem nobis provenire deposcat. May the holy Abbot Sabbas, we beseech Thee, O Lord, obtain by his prayers, that the Sacrifice laid on Thy holy altar, may profit us unto salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.

POSTCOMMUNION ¤ COMMEMORATION OF ST. SABBAS
May the pleading of blessed Sabbas, the Abbot, for us, as well as the reception of Thy Sacraments, protect us, O Lord, that we may both share in the glory of his works, and receive the help of his intercession. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who with Thee liveth and reigneth in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
